Literacy Week!Welcome to literacy week! We celebrated our love for reading by sharing our favourite books, building reading forts, having a reading-slumber party, transforming our door into our dream book shelf, and dressing up as the beloved characters in our most cherished stories. We loved making reading come to life!

Maths and Science ConnectionsThis week we continued our explorations with 3-dimensional shapes in engineering by building bridges. We began the week by learning about various 3D shapes, and creating them using clay and skewers. We then explored various ways to strengthen our 3D models using what we learned in bridge design. This gave us a chance to explore further by experimenting with load bearing bridges using recycled paper; we manipulated the paper in various way to learn how to strengthen its capacity to bear more weight. We learned that engineers also grapple with the same problems, and learned about some famous bridges found all around the world. Designing Our BridgesThis week we continued our exploration of how we can problem solve using bridges. During the week, we learned about various challenges faced by children all over the world, as they faced dangerous journeys to and from school; one way to ease a treacherous commute was to build bridges. We discussed what empathy meant, and decided that this was a very important first step when taking action for creative problem solving. Then, we learned about different bridge structures and experimented with various ways to strengthen them using supports. Finally, we designed our own bridges, and used legos and blocks to build them. Mapping and Coding with Bee BotsThis week we explored coding and mapping with Bee Bots. Our task was to create a pathway for our Bee Bots and chart them on a large grid map. The Bee Bots are designed to follow directional commands and it was our job to create a path for how the Bee Bots will move through a set sequence. Through this task, we strengthened our problem solving, and visual spatial reasoning skills. Making MapsThis week we learned all about maps. We explored various types of maps and learned how to use a compass to indicate the direction. We then drew a detailed "treasure map" of our classroom, using 2D shapes, and hid a golden coin for our K1/K2 buddies to find. Locating the hidden treasures was a big success using our detailed directions and maps as a guide. Building BridgesDuring science, we learned of children in Columbia who faced a problem--due to dangerous terrain, lack of infrastructure, they had to use a zip line to get to school. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wh0o2zNOx8Y We thought about various solutions to the problem, and decided that building a bridge above the steep canyon was a good solution. We started our exploration by building various bridges using different building material. We were then asked to test the stability of our designs by making the the bridges stood firm. We plan on researching further into bridges and extending our own designs as the weeks progress. |
The AuthorsThe G2.1 authors are a group of 7 and 8 year old students who attend ISS. We are passionate about learning together and enjoy sharing our journey with you!
