International Day will be celebrated on 6th October.
This year we will sing Edelweiss as a whole school. We will sing 6 rounds, with each round in a language represented at ISS. Unfortunately, not every language at school will be represented as it depends on the number of native speakers, as they will be leading those rounds of singing. (This will be practised in school). We will finish with the English round. The lyrics we will sing are below. I have also attached the links to the various language versions, should you want to practise at home. Happy singing! Edelweiss, edelweiss, Every morning you greet me Small and white, Clean and bright, You look happy to meet me Blossom of snow May you bloom and grow, Bloom and grow forever Edelweiss, edelweiss, Bless our home-lands forever JAPANESE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BP2F0EgNNLA KOREAN https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P58Yks0VE-I MANDARIN https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYim8kXovpI FRENCH Slightly altered lyrics https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjXIm_WGJag SPANISH https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hDDPQFK0cI ENGLISH https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQ7qRyDPMpk

We are in the middle of our inquiry cycle now and the children have been thinking and gathering information about different forms of communication, using the terms verbal and non-verbal.
They have also begun to inquire into the relationships in their own lives and how they communicate with those people. Friends and family who live in different countries or who have moved have been a common theme and we will explore this further next week. We have continued to have some fantastic sharing sessions, including home-made poi from New Zealand and Indonesian musical instruments, as well as games, toys and books from Japan, Indonesia, England, Italy. There are more lined up for next week. These have been a wonderful way for the children to learn more about each other and ask questions. They have been followed by playing and learning new games together. Communication building relationships in action. We got creative and came up with various ways to make 100. We also revisited our Place Value vocabulary and began to express numbers using, units, tens and hundreds.
This week, we have been discussing our new Central Idea and what we thought it meant. The students came up with some interesting questions that we added to our Wonder Wall. Here are a few examples: How do we send messages into space? How do people communicate in space? How did people communicate before phones? Can we understand many types of communication at the same time? How can music, singing and dancing can help us communicate?. We then identified various forms of communication in our collages as a precursor to our research and Finding out stage. We have started building our Daily 5 routines, beginning with Read to Self. The students have also begun bringing reading books home each night and have a library book. We have had fun with various activities involving co-operation and communication ahead of our Unit of Inquiry, Central Idea next week. MathleticsLog-in cards have also been given to the children and we have logged in and practised at school.

We have had a lovely first week getting to know each other and our new classroom. Here are just a few examples of what we have been up to this week. Using a variety of counting strategies collaboratively. Some students posed their own questions and explored how far their chain stretched- 73 and a half steps. We came up with freeze-frame images to represent the Learner Profiles.
